Stuck in the Corner

Written age 17

- by Thomas Torr -

Hell on earth, Icarus's oil prison
Forever trapped in terror.
His piercing pubescent scream dried up
And sealed by Breughel's smiteful brush.
His attention seeking disposition
Humored only by the vague interest
Of scholars and reluctant schoolboys.
Even the ocean remains unmoved
By fis futile struggles which
Waste and eternity with every gesture
His future is obvious yet infinitely distant
His past suggested but never recalled.

Above is a poem I wrote at school in in response to being prompted to wrtie a poem about this Breughel painting:

I was marked down by my classmates until my Mrs Mcloughlin asked me to explain the poem to the class, at which point they all gave me full marks. Mrs Mcloughlin included the poem in the school's English textbook for the following year (and beyond) as an example, as well as being published in the school's magazine. I personally don't get it.
